Piano legends and discoveries

McCoy Tyner, Ben l'Oncle Soul, Avishai Cohen, Christian Scott, Fink, Blick Bassy, Paolo Fresu and John Medeski will be in Cully from March 31 to April 8, 2017.

For this 35th edition, international stars and emerging artists will come together in a unique atmosphere in the heart of Cully. A total of 36 paying concerts, 90 free concerts and 14 stages will be animated over 9 days of music.

Piano legends
Piano takes center stage with the legendary McCoy Tyner. Accompanied by Geri Allen and Craig Taborn, he promises an evening of anthology, opening with Colin Vallon's trio for the opening of his fifth opus, Dance. In a completely different register, Tigran Hamasyan and John Medeski, both soloists, will make the Temple's unique acoustics resonate.

Loyal to Africa
Hardly a Festival goes by without Africa resonating in Cully. The continent will be celebrated throughout this edition with Blick Bassy, composer and writer from Cameroon. Other highlights include the afrobeat funk of Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, the war cries of the Amazones d'Afrique, and the ethio-jazz of Mulatu Astatke.

Jazz and its confluences
Piers Faccini to unveil new project I dreamed an islandwhile French soulman Ben l'Oncle Soul revisits the repertoire of Frank Sinatra.
The hypnotic Fin Greenhall (aka Fink) will present Fink's Sunday Night Blues Club while rapper Oddisee performs at the Next Step, accompanied by the musicians of The Good Compny for a show on the borders of hip-hop, soul jazz and abstract.

Friends of the Festival
Some great friends of the Festival return, starting with Avishai Cohen. Guided by his insatiable thirst for new musical experiences, the double bassist and singer is offering a double concert this year. On Saturday evening he'll be playing with his brand-new sextet Avishai Cohen Jazz Free, and the following day he'll be exploring the Temple's acoustics solo. A world premiere!
Paolo Fresu, this time accompanied by his legendary quintet, will perform his anniversary album ¡30!a hymn to friendship and melody that retraces 30 years of career.

Residencies and cartes blanches
The Caveau du Raisin opens its doors to For a wordan original project by three Festival regulars - Gauthier Toux on piano, Valentin Liechti on drums and Julien Herné on bass.
Matthieu Llodra's trio and their frenzied jams will once again transport audiences to the Caveau des Vignerons, while the THBBC will welcome Simon Gerber and his trio with its particular geometry.

European jazz at the Club
Inaugurated in 2016 and dedicated to the next generation of European jazz, the Club hosts a selection of today's finest bands. These include drummer Anne Paceo and her electric-influenced album Circles, as well as the five musicians of Mats-Up and their Nature of the Bluesa new project in search of the origins and essence of jazz.
