"Carmen" for the 20th anniversary

The Avenches Opera Festival is celebrating. For its 20th anniversary, it is presenting a new production of Bizet's "Carmen", to which Eric Vigié, artistic director of the festival, will give a flavour of Spain in the 60s.

Every summer, the Avenches Arena plays host to an opera, in this case "Nabucco" in 2013.

Performances will take place on July 4, 5, 6, 8, 11 and 12, 2014 at 9pm. Ticket sales open on December 1 with a special Christmas offer: a 10% discount on all ticket purchases until the end of the year.

Two singers have been chosen to interpret the cult character of the cigar girl: mezzo-soprano Béatrice Uria Monzon, considered one of the greatest Carmens, and Zurich soprano Noëmi Nadelmann, who will be playing the famous gypsy for the first time in her career.

Don José will be played by young Spanish tenor Jorge de Leon, alternating with Chilean Giancarlo Monsalve. French conductor Alain Guingal will lead the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.

This year, the Avenches Opéra Board of Trustees has appointed Michel Francey as General Manager. He is particularly familiar with the world of show business, having worked on the opening of the Geneva Arena and the Montreux Jazz Festival as a press attaché. He has also worked as a promotion manager at Universal Music and Sony Music.
