Participatory financing for a music camp

The Verbier Festival Music Camp has launched a fundraising campaign to finance its 2nd edition and raise awareness of the need for funds among its participants.

An introduction to the realities of being an orchestral musician in all its facets - that's the aim of the second Verbier Festival Music Camp, taking place in Verbier from July 7 to August 3, 2014.
For four weeks, 56 young musicians aged between 15 and 17 will explore the great symphonic repertoire in a professional setting, under the guidance of such prestigious conductors as Daniel Harding, Dima Slobodeniouk and Jesús López Cobos. They will also be tackling opera for the first time: L'elisir d'amore by Donizetti.

But being an excellent musician, capable of mastering a demanding and virtuoso repertoire, is not enough for a musical career to take off, say the Music Camp organizers: "in order to be able to take on a musical project, and stand out from the mass of talented young musicians, you also need to have a notion of financing and fundraising".
The Verbier Festival has chosen to include this essential step in the learning process of its young participants, particularly with a view to training. "Crowdfunding, with its playful counterparts and the possibility of making a contribution according to one's means, seemed to us to be the ideal method," says Câline Yamakawa, head of the music camp.

The 56 young people taking part in the course, from 20 different countries, mobilized to raise funds on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site. The campaign, launched in May, raised $28,590 - more than the target.
