The Festival has organized an International Composition Competition since 1985. Its aim is to encourage the creation of original works inspired by sacred texts or themes. For this new edition, composers can submit, by October 15, 2017, a work composed exclusively with the following instrumentation: 1 viola, 1 bassoon, 2 trombones (T+B), 2 timpani and 1 harp, for an instrumental ensemble of 6 instrumentalists. The instrumental piece must be inspired by the painting Vanitas - Still life with skull by Sebastian Stoskopff (1597-1658) in Basel's Kunstmuseum.

This 2017 edition of the Competition is organized in collaboration with the Haute Ecole de Musique Vaud Valais Fribourg (HEMU). The winning work will be premiered by the HEMU Instrumental Ensemble on Sunday, July 1, 2018, during the next Festival International de Musiques Sacrées.

The jury for this 13th edition of the competition is made up of: Thüring Bräm, jury president, Xavier Dayer, Dan Dediu, Hanna Kulenty and Michaël Levinas, who will deliberate in Fribourg, from November 22 to 25, 2017.

The rules for the 2017 Composition Competition and further information are available on the FIMS website, www.fims-fribourg.ch.
