The City of Fribourg has awarded the artist residency at the Atelier Jean Tinguely at the Cité des Arts in Paris. Its choice fell on composer Caroline Charrière, who will stay in the French capital for a year, from September 1, 2017.

Caroline Charrière, born in 1960 and trained as a flautist, orchestrator, composer and conductor, has been devoting herself mainly to her own works since 2000. Her music is regularly performed in Switzerland and abroad. She lives in Fribourg, teaches flute and musical culture at the Conservatoire de Fribourg, and directs the Chœur de Jade.
For his new creation, Human life, A universal passionIn her "Passion" project, inspired by the death of Christ and extended to the whole of humanity, she will use testimonies from children, teenagers and adults, gleaned from readings, films, documentaries and meetings. She will then create a booklet and set it to music. This creation could see the light of day in the form of concerts given in the spring of 2019.

"As an artist, I'm a witness to what's happening around me and within me. In these uncertain times, it's necessary and urgent for me to shed some light. This kind of work can only be written with a certain maturity and life experience. I feel that this is the moment for me, I'm ready."

The jury was impressed by the high quality of the project submitted and noted that Caroline Charrière, who already enjoys a successful career, is one of the few female composers in a very male-dominated field. Her artistic retirement at the Atelier Jean Tinguely in Paris should enable her to devote herself fully to her project and continue to promote her art beyond our canton. The jury is also delighted with the training she hopes to undertake at IRCAM, the Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique, which will be useful to her creative process. Caroline Charrière was a natural choice.
