The 74th Geneva Competition is dedicated to percussion and composition and will take place from November 8 to 21, 2019. All rounds are open to the public.
The competition is open to percussionists born after October 30, 1989 and to composers born after May 1, 1979.
Percussion
The application deadline is May 2, 2019. Pre-selections will take place in early June, and the competition itself will run from November 8 to 21, with the last day being the final with orchestra. The jury, chaired by Philippe Spiesser, is made up of Daniel Druckman, Fritz Hauser, Aiyun Huang, Marta Klimasara, Isao Nakamura and Hèctor Parra.
Candidates must present one keyboard piece and one multi-percussion piece for the pre-selections, to be chosen from an official list.
Composition
The subject of the 2019 composition competition is a work for oboe and ensemble. The work should last between 15 and 20 minutes. It must be written for solo oboe, with the possibility of also using the English horn. It must not use any electronic system, and the orchestra size specified in the competition rules must be respected.
The application deadline is also May 2, 2019. The final round will take place on November 8 in the form of a public performance of the three finalist works with the Lemanic Modern Ensemble. The jury is chaired by Kaija Saariaho and includes Julian Anderson, Toshio Hosokawa, Michael Jarrell and Liza Lim.
