New ideas for practice

On January 20 and 21, school principals and interested parties from all over Switzerland gathered at the Forum for Music Education 2023 (FFM). Two themes were on the agenda: digital transformation and inclusion.

Are we in the midst of digitalization, or has the wave already passed? And what are the implications for music training? On the first day of the MFF, speakers tackled some big questions. The practice-oriented presentation by Andréa Belliger, digitization specialist and prorector at HEP Lucerne, drew rapturous applause and led to a lively discussion during the break. "She brought tools I'd never heard of before," said one participant. Another noted that it's good to know about new possibilities, even if they won't necessarily be integrated into teaching. The second day focused on inclusion. Various short introductory presentations and a round-table discussion showed that the music training sector still has some way to go in this area. Felix Klieser, principal horn player and teacher at the Hanover University of Music and Performing Arts (D), spoke of his personal journey and called for disabled people not to be stigmatized as a homogeneous group, but rather for individual needs to be taken into account - especially in a pedagogical context, where it is always important for teachers to adapt musical teaching to their pupils.

"We need to adapt music education to a profoundly changing world, while preserving the values on which our work is based. That said, change does not mean disowning everything that existed before. Change is sometimes spectacular, sometimes minimal. We wish you strength, courage and perseverance. Philippe Krüttli, ASEM President
