Learning music in Geneva

In the canton of Geneva, music schools are grouped together in a confederation to meet all possible musical aspirations.

Since 2010, Geneva's music schools have been grouped together within a confederation, the CEGM, whose full name is Confédération des écoles genevoises de musique, rythmique Jaques-Dalcroze, danse et théâtre. The role of this association is to steer and coordinate the training offered. It also oversees the relationship between the public education system on the one hand, and higher education institutions on the other.

Today, the CEGM brings together ten schools covering all musical styles, ages and aspirations. The very young can enroll in Bulle d'air or Espace musical; brass ensemble enthusiasts can choose Ondine genevoise or Cadets de Genève; those interested in contemporary music can attend the Ecole des technologies musicales; those attracted by a humanistic approach can attend Studio Kodály; rhythm can be taught at Institut Jaques-Dalcroze; dance at Ecole de danse de Genève; strings at Accademia d'Archi. Of course, it's not compulsory to follow this orientation, since most schools offer courses in several disciplines, as do the two major institutions, the Geneva Conservatoire de Musique and the Conservatoire Populaire.

Together, the CEGM schools offer training in three main categories: basic training for anyone wishing to learn and develop an amateur artistic practice; intensive courses for students aged 6 to 14 or so who wish to receive a broader education; and pre-professional courses reserved for the most motivated and talented students. In the latter two categories, the Department of Education may grant a reduction in tuition fees.

Finally, the CEGM also has a Contemporary Music Center, created several years ago on the initiative of a group of teachers with the aim of facilitating access to recent musical works and promoting their learning. The center manages teaching materials and scores for teachers and students. It also organizes auditions, shows and concerts.
