Beethoven Year 2020 blog

52 x Beethoven

To mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, Swiss Music Review took a weekly look at a different work from his catalog.

Starting on January 3, 2020, every Friday we published a short, simple text on a work by Beethoven, in French and German. We chose well-known pieces, others less so, others even marginal. Some were linked to a particular time of year, others had a Swiss connection.

A selection of them was also printed in our December 2020 issue.

Our author, Michael Kube, is a musicologist and editor who teaches at the Stuttgart HEM and the University of Würzburg. He has not written the kind of musicological analysis that can be found just about everywhere, but has told us the stories behind the notes, behind the interpretative traditions and behind the way the work was received when it was first performed.

The project was supported by the Oertli Foundation, which we would like to thank.
