SSPM celebrates its 125th anniversary
The SSPM was founded on October 1, 1893 in Olten (initially as the Association Suisse des Maîtres de Chant et de Musique). Its 125th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year at various events organized by the central association and the sections.
Gabriela Martinez - In these times of change, we can consider this anniversary a great privilege. It is a sign of constancy and perseverance.
Throughout an eventful century, and in spite of numerous social and economic upheavals, the association has succeeded in asserting itself and advancing music education in Switzerland.
From the outset, the SSPM has emphasized the profile of the music teacher as a specialized professional, and participated in the profound transformations of the music education landscape in Switzerland. As a result, the profession of music teacher has become more than just a vocation - it has become a genuine, recognized and highly qualified profession. The SSPM has played a key role in this process.
As the largest professional association in the field of music education, the SSPM is aimed at all music teachers, whether salaried or self-employed, and offers services and tools to support them in their professional activities.
Through political lobbying, collaboration with partner associations and trade union activities, the association is committed to high-quality musical training and fights against cost-cutting measures and the weakening of the cultural and educational sector.
The evolution of our membership categories reflects the changing needs and realities of musical life. In order to adapt to these changes, the SSPM has, for example, been open to students since last year. Of course, it has long recognized the different styles of contemporary music and their teaching, and has expanded in this area too. All qualified music teachers in the jazz and contemporary music sector (rock/pop/blues/funk, etc.) are now eligible for SSPM membership.
Events during the commemorative year
During this commemorative year, the central association will be offering concerts, workshops and lectures. The main event will take place on September 15, 2018 in Olten, a date close to that of the SSPM's foundation. A working group is in charge of preparing and organizing this day, and concrete projects are currently being implemented.
