From 33 to 22 music schools

Music schools in the canton of Lucerne underwent a major transformation last year. They have regrouped into regional music schools, simplified their processes and improved the quality of their offerings.

The many mergers taking place in the canton were prompted by the reform of tasks and finances (AFR18) approved by the electorate. In order to support financially weak communes, the canton now covers half the costs of all state schools, including music schools, which are included in the Education Act. To qualify, however, they must have a minimum enrolment of 500 students. The association of music schools in the canton of Lucerne (MML) approved this development from the outset. "Mergers have been, and still are, a lot of work for all concerned," points out Ursula Kleeb, Director of the Adligenswil-Udigenswil Music School and the Canton of Lucerne's delegate to the ASEM. "But they do help to improve harmonization and quality, while giving teaching staff greater security with regard to activity rates."

Facts and figures

The canton's 22 music schools have around 800 teachers and 26,000 enrolments. They offer a wide range of branches, from individual instruction (including traditional instruments such as the Schwyz accordion) to ensembles. Collaboration with wind music societies is intensive and much appreciated by both partners: "We attach great importance to wind music," stresses Ursula Kleeb.

Twice a year, the VML organizes a meeting of the canton's music school directors. These meetings are always well attended, as the need for exchange is considerable, particularly in view of the transformations undertaken in recent years.

Talented children and young people have already been benefiting from the cantonal incentive program since 2014. In addition, numerous regional competitions and the Central Switzerland Youth Music Competition offer students the chance to showcase their skills.
