SUISA is the cooperative of music authors and publishers.
It was founded in 1923 as a cooperative society. Approximately
38,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers are affiliated to SUISA. SUISA collects royalties when music is used in public in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Thanks to reciprocal representation agreements with over 100 sister societies worldwide, SUISA represents an almost worldwide repertoire of music, corresponding to over 2 million authors. SUISA employs around 200 people between Zurich, Lausanne and Lugano.
In 2017, SUISA founded the joint venture Mint Digital Services in collaboration with the American music organization SESAC. The company is responsible for the international billing and administration of music licenses for SESAC, its subsidiary The Harry Fox Agency and SUISA with online suppliers. It also offers its services to publishing houses.
SUISA manages "small rights", i.e. non-theatrical musical works, concertante versions of theatrical works and musical works forming part of motion pictures, television films or other audiovisual productions. It grants its clients, such as concert organizers, record producers and radio and TV stations, a license authorizing them to perform, broadcast, retransmit or reproduce music. Major rights, such as opera or musicals, are managed by the Swiss Society of Authors SSA.
