Diploma in Orchestra Practice

The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, in collaboration with the Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, offers a training program leading to a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Orchestral Practice (DAS).

The training, provided by the two institutions, aims to deepen and broaden professional skills in orchestral practice (symphonic and operatic) in order to optimize the success of candidates in orchestral competitions. Reserved for students under 29 years of age (as of April 30, 2013), regardless of nationality, this program is open to holders of a Master's degree in performance or a qualification deemed equivalent.

The training course, 900 hours over 12 months (September 2013 / August 2014), is made up of two compulsory modules:

  • an orchestral internship with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande preparing scores and participating in concerts, performances, tours, recordings... (720 hours over 12 months from September to August). The gross remuneration for this internship is CHF 30,000.
  • a study program at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève with two teaching modules (180 hours over 10 months from September to June): on the one hand, orchestral lines, mental preparation and competition simulation, and on the other, chamber music and historical knowledge.

The program culminates in a diploma thesis (60 hours).

Training is offered in the following disciplines: violin (I and II), viola, horn (treble and bass) and percussion. Applications should be sent by post before March 1, 2013. Successful candidates will then be invited to an audition in Geneva. The cost of this training course is CHF 4,500.00, payable by the successful candidate.
