ImaginaSon: a collaboration between music and film
The ImaginaSon show was born last year out of a collaboration between the HEMU (Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne) and the Cinémathèque suisse, and is now enriched for its second edition by the contribution of the ECAL (Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne).

This evening of concert and cinema, which takes place on February 14, 2013 at the Cinémathèque suisse in Lausanne, is the culmination of a collaboration lasting several months between the HEMU composition class and the ECAL film department. Yet this "ciné-concert" is of a special kind. The student directors reassembled sequences from three emblematic films from the history of cinema (Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West, François Truffaut's American Night, Béla Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies) to create three new visual propositions. Based on these new sequences, students from the composition class wrote an original score.
The orchestra that will play this music at the same time as the projection includes a flute, English horn, saxophone, harp and cello. The choice of instruments was made a priori, to give an additional constraint to the exercise but also, and perhaps above all, to make these musical proposals a real field of sound experimentation far from illustration. The aim of the collaboration between composers and directors was not to make image take precedence over sound, as is often the case, but rather to seek out new possibilities for the interweaving of one in relation to the other. As between the HEMU composition class and the ECAL film department.
