Dedicated to the German Lied (Mahler and the Second Viennese School), the Gustav Mahler Competition is held in principle every two years. Its aim is to encourage young talent in French-speaking Switzerland, and to promote a repertoire that is still little-known in the French-speaking world. It is open to students enrolled at one of the two schools (HEM Geneva or HEMU Lausanne), as well as to graduates who obtained their diploma in 2011 or later. It rewards a vocal-piano duo that has demonstrated exceptional artistic qualities. In anticipation of the competition, the music schools have organized several masterclasses throughout the academic year, given by leading figures in the field of German Lied.

Chaired by Philippe Dinkel, Director of the HEM de Genève, the jury for the 2014 edition awarded the Prix Gustav Mahler to the Duo Chlysandre, made up of Sandrine Droin (soprano) and Clémence Hirt (piano). They were awarded the sum of 10,000 francs donated by the Société Gustav Mahler de Genève (SGMG).
