Tweek - "4": the puzzle album
When the funky Patatas Chipas Club team up with members of the Oni/Epik rap project, a fusion of stage and audience is immediately established.
The idea is to maintain this proximity through news that makes people want to follow the adventure. Tweek took shape with the release of the fourth and final part of the "4" concept album, entitled Bottom Right. An album that is anything but classic, since it includes four EPs (4, 5 or 6-track discs), released successively at the rate of one per year. This puzzle, which began in 2009 with the release of Bottom Leftand then Top Left and Top RightThe result is a sixteen-track album (plus 4 bonus tracks) and, graphically, a complete album cover. The whole thing has just been released as a box set, in June 2013 (Disques Office).
While the marriage of the two groups, whose collaborations were becoming more and more frequent, was obvious to the seven members of the project, the alliance of styles took time to mature until it found its balance. The cohabitation of brass and funk rhythms with rap, most evident in the first EP of the series, quickly evolved into a more electro color in the second, and then moved a little dirtier towards rock in the third. With the last, Bottom RightTweek settles into a sound with more identity, and seems to have found its own personality, firmly rooted in the interventions of the excellent beatboxer and samples, and resolutely rap. A musical fresco whose construction "4" invites us to savor.
Still, listening to tracks like GirlWith the band's very "young" sound, for example, one might wonder whether the project could shake off its (superficial) image as a band for teenagers... The question doesn't remain unanswered for long. Tweek is magnificently produced and can easily take a seat in the big league.
Plus, bonus remixes by Alain Frey (Aloan), Christophe Calpini (huge sidekick of Truffaz and Audétat, among others) and Earcloud (Epik), Bottom Right concludes four years of explosive, evolving musical investigations.
