50 years of the Sion Festival

Katia and Marielle Labèque, the Vienna Klangforum, Gidon Kremer and Augustin Dumay are just some of the names on the line-up for the 50th edition of the Sion Festival, from August 14 to 31, 2014. The program is once again organized around the theme "Violin Voices".

Artistic Director Pavel Vernikov invites the best artists of the moment to step off the beaten track. A stimulating formula that should appeal to a wide audience. Musicologist Yaël Hêche will introduce some of the concerts, making them accessible to all.

Alongside the headliners, Valais artists such as Brigitte Fournier, Stéphane Chappuis and Sylviane Bourban will take part in the closing concert at Sion Cathedral with the Novantiqua choir. An evening tribute to the Festival's creator, Tibor Varga, will bring together some of his students: Madeleine Carruzzo, Francesco De Angelis, Gyulia Stuller, Latica Honda Rosenberg, Mirjiam Contzen, Suzanne Rybicki- Varga, Hermann and Liza Schatzman. Charles Sigel, well known to RTS listeners, will host the evening.

To be more in tune with its audience, the event will no longer take place at the beginning of August, but at the beginning of the autumn. And to satisfy the curiosity of music lovers and create opportunities for fruitful encounters, a duets festival will welcome musicians from 8 to 88 years of age. Violinists, accompanied by pianists, will have the opportunity to rub shoulders with the violin stars present in Sion in August 2014.

As in 2013, some of the squares and streets of Sion's old town will be buzzing with "Musique en fête" on Saturday August 23. Most of the event will take place at the Théâtre de Valère. The Théâtre du Crochetan in Monthey will host the 50th Anniversary Gala Concert, which requires a larger stage.
