To open the Festival, American maestro James Levine has chosen the Verbier Festival for his return after eight long years away from European stages. Now Conductor laureate of the Verbier Festival Orchestra (VFO), he has contributed to the young orchestra's success since 2000, helping it to become one of the world's finest training orchestras.

Also returning for the first time in seven years is the great Indian conductor Zubin Mehta, who conducted the Festival's very first concert on July 15, 1994. The VFO will also have the honor of being conducted by Valery Gergiev, Manfred Honeck, Gianandrea Noseda and, to close this edition in style, by its musical director Charles Dutoit. These six conductors have left their mark on the Festival's history, and "there's no doubt they'll be writing a new page this summer", say the organizers.

The festival will also welcome Ton Koopman, a leading figure in Baroque music, the RIAS Kammerchor from Berlin, and Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk, accompanied by Paul McCreesh as conductor of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra.

In the church, where an intimate atmosphere is created between audience and artists, soprano Angela Gheorghiu will meet guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, and pianist András Schiff will give his first recital in Verbier.

Finally, the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, ambassadors of Cuban music, will visit Verbier on their farewell tour.
