The festival kicks off on July 22 with violinist Kyung Wha Chung, recently back on stage after a twelve-year absence. This will be her first Verbier appearance alongside Charles Dutoit. Carmen by Bizet, (July 25), and Falstaff by Verdi (July 29) will be the season's major operas. As for pianists, Verbier welcomes Grigory Sokolov, Yuja Wang, András Schiff and Daniil Trifonov. Iván Fischer will conduct an evening dedicated entirely to Wagner (August 4). Finally, to round off the event, Michael Tilson Thomas will conduct Mahler's Symphony No. 3 (August 7).

The Verbier Festival Orchestra will be working this year with Music Director Charles Dutoit, of course, but also with Paavo Järvi, Iván Fischer, Jesús López Cobos and Michael Tilson Thomas. The Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra will be led by Music Director Gábor Takács-Nagy, as well as Marc Minkowski, András Schiff, Emmanuel Krivine and Michael Tilson Thomas. Not forgetting the young musicians of the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra, led by their charismatic musical director Daniel Harding and Dima Slobodeniouk.

"Generation Verbier
The Verbier Festival's music education programs have helped train a host of artists, including Daniil Trifonov, Yuja Wang, the Quatuor Ebène, Andreas Ottensamer, Emöke Baráth and soprano Sylvia Schwartz. Facing those who have already made their mark, the next generation will be represented by Behzod Abduraimov, Benjamin Beilman, Ying Fang, Lukas Geniušas, George Li and the 15-year-old violinist Daniel Lozakovitj, a former participant in the Verbier Festival Academy, who will give his own recital this year.
There's also the jazz presence of Dianne Reeves, and the gypsy and Andalusian notes of the Gipsy Kings.
