Ascona Musical Weeks

For 70 years, the Semaines Musicales d'Ascona has offered a program alternating between major symphonic concerts, chamber music evenings and solo recitals. The world's most famous artists have performed here.

The 74th edition, in the care of Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi, features eleven main concerts from September 4 to October 11 in the evocative settings of the churches of San Francesco in Locarno and Collegio Papio in Ascona.

The line-up includes the celebrated couple Charles Dutoit and Martha Argerich, as well as Renaud Capuçon and Marc André Hamelin (for a tribute to Alexis Weissenberg), the Emerson Quartet, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the young Lahay Shani, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (in an evening entirely dedicated to the influence of Hungarian popular music on Liszt, Haydn, Bartók, Kodaly and other composers), the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in a program dedicated to Sibelius and Nordic music, not forgetting the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, whose artistic evolution, led by Principal Conductor Markus Poschner, was crowned in 2018 by the prestigious ICMA international recording prize.

In addition to two concerts devoted to young European talent and a free concert for families, this year's new features include a performance by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who will present the Bird catalog by Messiaen on a special day, taking place at four sites between dawn and late evening.
